A Matter of Taste (DVD)

Nominated for five awards at the 2001 Cisars, this exquisite film examines the psychologically twisted relationship between a young waiter, Nicolas (Jean-Pierre Lorit), who is hired by an important businessman, Fridiric (Bernard Girardeau), to taste his food at each meal. Though Nicolas`s girlfriend, Biatrice (Florence Thomassin), warns him not to trust Fridiric, he nonetheless dives headfirst into this strange but seemingly ideal job. However, as Nicolas event planner job description and Fridiric begin to know each other better, their relationship becomes dangerously complicated. The wonderfully manipulative Fridiric exercises a unique power over Nicolas. After a painful initiation into Fridiric`s carrot-and-stick method of training, Nicolas not only accepts the unwritten rules of his job description, but is blissfully brainwashed by his new role. What happens thereafter is not shocking, but it is not at all what the audience expects. Director Bernard Rapp has created a masterpiece with this prickly film. In the very first scene, he reveals the mysterious ending. The rest of the film--a series of interviews with the characters interspersed with flashbacks of the actual events--asks not what happened, but why it happened. Bernard Girardeau is captivating in his role as the controlling Fridiric, event planner job description and he is complimented perfectly by the malleable Nicolas (a likewise excellent Jean-Pierre Lorit).
